When companies are local, unions can be local; when companies are national, unions must be national; when companies are global, unions must be global. (UNI, 2006)

“Global-” has become an almost ubiquitous prefix for organisations attempting to demonstrate modernity and relevance. Often this is little more than empty branding. In the case of global unions, the word denotes real change. From their previous incarnations, initially as International Trade Secretariats (ITSs), then as Global Union Federations (GUFs), and latterly to Global Unions, unions have self-consciously redefined their international role, and their strategy with respect to capital.
