Burning Out Workers at Both Ends Print E-mail

The BBC uncovered exploitative working conditions at a banana ripening and packing plant in Luton, England in May. What the media reports do not make clear however, is that being part of Tesco's supply chain is what has driven companies like Pratts to hire migrant workers through agencies. Workers at both ends are being exploited because Tesco is more concerned about fighting price wars with its main competitors than fulfilling its stated commitments to social responsibility along its supply chains. The GMB which is trying to organise in Pratts, and Banana Link, both members of the Tescopoly Alliance, and Costa Rican union SITRAP react to the media coverage.
