How can "academics" relate to, support and even contribute to the revival of an undeniably demoralised trade union movement? Of course, it depends on which academics we're talking about. Those gathered at the Critical Labour Studies conference are, as our self-definition suggests, critical of the "mainstream" of labour studies - or what, today, more often receives the unfortunate title of "Human Resources Management".
