Unions stand to reap significant benefits from recent advances in information technology (IT). Internet access, web pages, e-mail, and video-conferencing provide unions with new opportunities to spread their message and coordinate the actions of members and staff. This study provides the first systematic evidence on how unions are using IT. Although the ultimate purpose of our research is to assess the consequences of IT, the data summarized in this report allow readers to "benchmark" their union's IT use against that of 75 national unions that responded to our survey, gain insights into the challenges of implementing IT, and see what types of software are popular among unions.
