Labour leadership - 12/08/2006 23:49 Does the forthcoming change of Labour Party leader provide an opportunity for trade union activists in the UK to consider and develop the political work of the unions?

Those of us supporting John McDonnell - see www.john4leader.org.uk - hope that trade unionists will want to support a candidate who supports key union priorities, such as the Trade Union Freedom Bill and the Public Services Not Private Profit campaign.

The votes of levy paying trade unionists could be very influential - but only if enough MPs can be persuaded to nominate a candidate who supports trade unions.

If Gordon Brown were to continue neoliberal policies without serious and sustained opposition - would that, as some on the left clearly believe, spell the end of the union link with Labour?

I'd be interested to know what people think.
