Trade Union Engagement with Academia - and Vice Versa - 22/05/2007 21:33 This thread discusses the Content article: Trade Union Engagement with Academia - and Vice Versa

Sheila

I read your article with interest.

It seems to me that it would be fruitful to bring together union activists and engaged academics on a regular basis. A journal would be one way, but what about some joint action around campaigns that link together their interests?

One example could be the 'Strangers Into Citizens' campaign for regularisation of 'illegal migrants'. Trade unionists hardly need any instruction in the pitfalls of allowing approx 400,000 irregular migrants to subsist in low-paid labour, with no rights of representation. Similarly, many academics are concerned with 'globalisation' and modes of political resistance..here's a classic example on their doorstep.

The 'Strangers into Citizens' campaign is calling for regional groups to support it. We could try and form some networks to help???

Re:Trade Union Engagement with Academia - and Vice Versa - 19/07/2007 17:34 I thought it had an interesting context and think the very clear exploration of trade union engagement with acdmia should be examined closely

Re:Trade Union Engagement with Academia - and Vice Versa - 19/07/2007 21:01 Maybe we might expand this a bit more, taking the idea of activist - academic engagement along the route of a regular regional workshop, say organised through UIN.

We could call for interested local organisers/activists to bring their experiences of recent campaigns - both positive and negative - to a workshop focusing upon a theme like 'current issues in union organising', and ask academics to contribute their views in relation to knowledge of relevant literature/studies from other campaigns, countries, etc. A summary of the discussion, or bullet point list of key issues, could easily be posted on UIN afterwards.

If such a thing came to pass, and was then rolled out across the country, or wider, couldn't the resulting summaries/ bullet points serve as a basis for future UIN conferences; or at least a useful resource for campaigners who look on UIN??
