How can we best build a vibrant, growing trade union movement? Print E-mail

How can we best build the movement capable of reaching out, and representing, the next generation of workers? Why not start where we're already at? Why not…activate the activists?  Workplace trade union activists - shop stewards, departmental reps and others - share a set of unique assets which make them ideally qualified to kickstart union organisation and renewal. These include:  

  • closeness to and shared experience with the members;
  • networks of contacts within their industry or sector;
  • deep commitment to the cause of trade unionism;
  • roots in the community around their workplace;
  • above-average knowledge of and interest in labour movement issues, ideas and initiatives.
